Sandi Toksvig Shuts Down Retirement Talk Live on Air — A Bake Off Legend Fires Back After Susanna Reid’s Awkward Apology
The apology came mid-sentence, but the damage was done. Sandi didn’t flinch — she fired back with wit, warmth, and a reminder that she’s nowhere near done
The Great British Bake Off’s much-loved former host, Sandi Toksvig, has dismissed any rumours of her retiring soon, stating “I’m still full of beans”.
The 67-year-old presenter and comedian, who co-hosted the popular Channel 4 baking show from 2017 to 2020 alongside Noel Fielding before being succeeded by Matt Lucas, has since been focusing on her political activism, other presenting roles, and writing a variety of books.
She joined Good Morning Britain presenters Susanna Reid and Ed Balls on Wednesday to discuss her latest book, Friends of Dorothy.
However, after Susanna had to apologise for suggesting that Sandi might be “slowing down”, the comedian clarified her retirement plans.
She then jested: “I’m glad you’re not showing any signs of slowing down at your grand old age.”
Sandi humorously responded: “Can I say that hadn’t occurred to me until that moment, and now suddenly I’m thinking, ‘Oh wait a second, maybe I should slow down!'”
As the interview was wrapping up, she added: “I’m still full of beans! If I desire to retire, you’ll be the first to know.”
“Please don’t retire yet,” Susanna implored, before handing over to Sandi to fulfil her 45-year dream of presenting the weather as she briefly took over for Alex Beresford on Good Morning Britain.
This follows Sandi’s explanation for her departure from the Bake Off.
She had previously stated that she was stepping down “to spend more time with my other work”.
“As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show,” her statement added.
“Spending time with Prue, Paul and Noel has been one of the great pleasures of my life. These are friendships which I know will continue beyond the confines of television.”
But in an interview last year with Radio Times, she confessed: “To be honest, I left Bake Off because I stopped having fun.
“I was literally standing there watching meringues dry and thinking, ‘Oh my god, my brain is atrophying.'”
She added that she hasn’t been tuning in to watch the new seasons, quipping: “If somebody makes The Great British Cheese Off, I’m in.”
