BBC Breakfast stars Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt announced heartbreaking news minutes into Thursday’s (September 4) show.
During today’s edition of the hit morning programme, Naga and Charlie updated viewers on the latest news from across the UK and around the world.
Mike Bushell was also in the studio to present the sports segment, while Matt Taylor was on hand to deliver regular weather updates.
At the start of the show, Naga and Charlie shared a devastating development from Portugal after 15 people lost their lives in the derailment of the 140-year-old Gloria funicular, a major tourist attraction in the capital Lisbon.
“A day of national mourning is being held across Portugal after 15 people were killed when a funicular tram derailed and crashed into a building,” Naga announced.

Charlie added: “Emergency services and foreigners were among those killed, and another 18 people are in hospital.”
