‘Jeopardy!’ Game Comes Down to a Nobel Prize Clue After Three Costly Daily Double Misses
A challenging episode of Jeopardy! on Monday, October 26, ended with a tense Final Jeopardy! showdown centered on a Nobel Prize winner. After three Daily Double attempts went wrong, the contestants entered the final round with relatively low scores, leaving the championship within reach for more than one player.
Shannon Leigh Godwin, an interior designer from Oakland, California, returned for her second game after defeating four-day champion Anthony Cantor on Friday. She began Monday’s episode with $16,001 in previous winnings and faced two challengers: Jamie Calandro, a high school music teacher from Ellsworth, Maine, and Karen Bradley, a regulatory operations director from Long Island City, New York.

Three Missed Daily Doubles Keep the Game Close
Godwin encountered trouble on a Daily Double, wagering $3,000 of her available $3,200 but failing to come up with the correct response. Despite the costly mistake, she managed to recover and maintain her lead.
Bradley found both Daily Doubles during Double Jeopardy!, but missed each one, giving Godwin an opportunity to stay ahead.
One clue proved particularly controversial. It read: “The Roman numerals for 1900 can also be used as an abbreviation for this design style that emerged in the 1900s.”
The correct response was Mid-Century Modern, commonly abbreviated as MCM. Bradley was unable to provide an answer.
The wording prompted criticism on Reddit, where one viewer described the clue as “too ambiguous” and “misleading.” The user added that it seemed to need another review “for fairness.”
By the end of Double Jeopardy!, Godwin had $8,200. Calandro followed with $4,800, while Bradley stood at $3,600. With the scores still relatively close, Final Jeopardy! would determine the outcome.

A Nobel Prize Clue Decides the Championship
The Final Jeopardy! category was “Tribute,” with a clue connecting a Nobel Prize winner to an unusual Google Doodle:
“To honor the 126th birthday of this Nobel Prize winner, a Google Doodle featured a cat & a feline ghost.”
Two contestants came up with the correct response: Erwin Schrödinger.
Bradley wrote, “Who is Schrodinger?” and answered correctly. She wagered $3,300, bringing her final score to $6,900.
Godwin also identified Schrödinger, although she spelled his name “Schroedinger.” Her $1,401 wager raised her score to $9,601, securing her second consecutive victory.
Calandro, however, went with “Who is Lewis Carroll?” The response was incorrect, and his $3,401 wager reduced his final total to $1,399.
Who Was Erwin Schrödinger?
Schrödinger was an Austrian physicist known for his contributions to quantum theory. He developed the Schrödinger equation, a fundamental tool for calculating a system’s wave function and describing how it changes over time.
His name is also widely associated with the famous thought experiment known as Schrödinger’s cat, making him a fitting answer to a clue involving a cat and a feline ghost.
Shannon Leigh Godwin Returns for Game Three
With the final scores settled, Godwin finished the episode with $9,601 in winnings, bringing her two-day total to $25,602. Bradley placed second with $6,900, while Calandro finished third with $1,399.
After defeating four-time champion Anthony Cantor in her previous appearance, Godwin has now won two games in a row. She is set to return on Tuesday, October 27, for her third game.
Can she extend her winning streak, or will a new challenger bring her run to an end?
