‘Wheel of Fortune’ Contestant Misses Out on $59,450 After Struggling With Bonus Round Puzzle
McKenzie Rowland dominated much of her Wheel of Fortune appearance, securing a narrow victory and earning a chance to take home nearly $60,000. But in the Bonus Round, one unexpected letter selection and a difficult final phrase stood between the South Carolina contestant and a $40,000 prize.
Rowland appeared on the February 10 episode as part of the show’s NASCAR Tournament week. A passionate NASCAR fan, she had plenty of reasons to embrace the special theme. She and her husband, Kyle, share a love of racing after he introduced her to the sport, and even their nine-month-old baby’s nursery features racing memorabilia.
Kyle was in the audience to support her as she competed for a place among the tournament’s top three winners, who would return for a chance to win a trip to the Daytona 500.

Rowland Takes the Lead With a Racing-Themed Win
Rowland faced Dan Geilston of Aston, Pennsylvania, a dedicated baseball card collector, and Talbert Woodall of Somers Point, New Jersey. Rowland and Geilston each picked up an early Toss-Up puzzle, setting the stage for a competitive game.
The momentum shifted in Rowland’s favor during the “Before & After” category. She correctly solved the playful combination “Harrison Ford Bronco,” earning a trip to Chicagoland Speedway and raising her total to $11,950.
Woodall, who lost an arm in a motorcycle accident a decade earlier, also got on the scoreboard by solving “Slower Traffic. Keep Right,” adding $3,100 to his winnings.
Geilston responded in the Prize Puzzle round, solving “Staying Hydrated” to win a getaway to the Canadian Rockies. The prize brought his total to $14,599 and put pressure on Rowland as the competition continued.
A Late Breakthrough Secures Rowland’s Victory

The Triple Toss-Ups tightened the race. Geilston solved two of the three puzzles, collecting an additional $4,000, while Rowland answered the remaining one.
The final puzzle proved more difficult, with contestants repeatedly choosing letters that were not part of the answer. Rowland eventually broke through by solving “It Pays The Bills,” earning another $7,500.
She finished the main game with $19,450, narrowly beating Geilston’s $18,599. Woodall ended his run with $5,100.
With the victory secured, Rowland advanced to the Bonus Round and chose the category “Phrase.”
One Letter Choice Becomes a Talking Point

After the standard letters R, S, T, L, N and E appeared, Rowland selected J, C, H and A.
The board displayed the pattern:
_ H A T A _ _ N _ _ _ _ E R
As the clock counted down, Rowland managed to identify the opening words as “What a …” However, she couldn’t work out the remaining part of the phrase before time expired.
The correct solution was “What a Kind Offer.”
The envelope revealed an additional $40,000. Had Rowland solved the puzzle, her total winnings would have climbed to $59,450.
Instead, she left with the $19,450 she had earned during the main game.
Fans Debate the Bonus Round Strategy

Following the broadcast, viewers took to social media to discuss Rowland’s final attempt, with particular attention given to her decision to select the letter J.
Some fans questioned the choice, arguing that J is an uncommon consonant in Bonus Round answers unless it begins a word. They also felt the visible letters offered little indication that the puzzle would follow that pattern.
Others speculated that Rowland might have been trying to form a phrase beginning with “Just,” only to discover that the board did not contain an S.
The discussion centered on whether a different letter selection might have helped her identify the phrase before the clock ran out. Although Rowland had built a strong lead and won the main game, the final challenge left her just short of a much larger payday.
It also remains unclear whether she will earn another opportunity to compete during NASCAR Tournament week. The tournament’s top three winners are set to return for a chance to win a trip to the Daytona 500.
For Rowland, the episode ended with a victory and $19,450 in winnings—but the missed Bonus Round prize gave viewers plenty to debate.
