Nicole Kidman’s husband criticized for changing lyrics to song written for his wife
Amidst his broken marriage, singer Keith Urban attracted attention when he changed the lyrics of the song ‘The Fighter’ which was originally inspired by his love for actress Nicole Kidman.
In the video, posted by country singer Maggie Baugh on Instagram on September 27, Keith Urban changed the original lyrics: “When someone hurts you, baby, I’ll be your warrior.” The 57-year-old star looked at Maggie – the 25-year-old artist who was playing guitar and singing a duet with him – and sang: “When someone hurts you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player.”

When the news of Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s breakup broke out on September 29, along with rumors that Keith was dating a young woman in the music industry, many people rushed to Maggie’s post to criticize the singer. Many people said that Keith’s act of changing the lyrics about Nicole was disrespectful to his wife – his partner of 19 years, who helped him overcome his addiction.
“That song was originally for Nicole. The fact that you changed the name to someone else just shows your true nature. It’s scary. Nicole deserves a better man,” one account wrote. Others agreed: “It’s ridiculous to do that to a song inspired by your wife”, “Nicole is the mother of your children. If you can’t respect the mother of your children, at least respect your daughters!”, “The fact that he abandoned Nicole seems suspicious”…

Some people questioned why Maggie Baugh posted the video and proudly captioned it: “He just said so.”
However, there were also audiences who spoke up to defend Keith Urban and Maggie. They affirmed that the male singer changed the lyrics many times during live performances to create a connection with his colleagues on stage, without any emotional implications. “I have followed Keith’s shows for the past 15 years. He often changes the names of the characters in the songs to stir up the atmosphere. This is absolutely not evidence of an extramarital relationship,” a fan emphasized. Maggie’s fans also explained that perhaps the female singer posted the video because she was too happy to be mentioned by a big star. “I understand that posting the video now is not the right time, but she is a young girl, probably very excited to hear that and wanted to share it,” the fan wrote.
The Fighter is from Keith Urban’s 2016 album Ripcord , a collaboration with Carrie Underwood. The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and was certified triple platinum. In 2017, Urban revealed to Billboard that the song was inspired by Nicole Kidman: “When life gets tough, I need to hold her tighter, take care of her, protect her. It’s almost like a vow.”
The Grammy Award-winning artist posted a video of himself singing the song in the car with Nicole in May 2016, which received rave reviews from fans.

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman married in 2006 and have two daughters, 17-year-old Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. During their 19 years together, the Australian couple has been a symbol of lasting, passionate love. The two artists often appear together at events and talk about their deep love for each other in interviews. In June, Nicole Kidman posted a sweet photo with Keith, celebrating their 19th wedding anniversary.
On September 29, the news that Nicole Kidman and her husband had quietly split up caused a stir. According to TMZ , Keith moved out to live separately since the beginning of the summer while his wife still lived in the old house with their two children. Sources revealed that Nicole tried to save the marriage but failed. There were rumors that the country singer had dated another girl since the separation, leaving Nicole shocked and heartbroken.
On September 30, Nicole Kidman filed for divorce in Nashville. She cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason and requested primary custody of her two children.
