When life gave Jon Bon Jovi lemons, he made lemonade music.

The Bon Jovi frontman (whose real name is John Francis Bongiovi) shared that he had to reevaluate how to make his forthcoming album Forever (Legendary Edition) after undergoing vocal cord surgery in 2022 and then going through intensive rehab.

“This album is more than just a collection of collaborations, it is an album borne out of necessity,” Jon shared in a statement to E! News. “My vocal cord surgery and subsequent rehab was a well-documented journey that played out while releasing Forever in June 2024.”

Due to his recovery process from the procedure, the 63-year-old decided to shift his focus from touring to recording Forever (Legendary Edition), which will drop Oct. 24 and combines new songs with reimagined renditions of tracks from his 2024 LP of the same name, two of which will arrive as singles on Aug. 29.

“I was singing well enough in the studio for the recording, but the vocal demands and rigors of touring were still out of reach for me,” he explained. “Without the ability to tour or promote an album we were all very proud of, I decided to call on some friends to help me in my time of need.”

And Jon’s musically inclined pals certainly showed up for him when he needed it, with stars including Avril Lavigne, Jelly Roll, Ryan Tedder, Bruce Springsteen and Lainey Wilson all featuring as guests on the 14-track record.

“All are great singers, artists, and also just great people,” the “You Give Love a Bad Name” rocker shared. “The result is an album with a new viewpoint and new spirit—a collaboration album that proves we all get by in this world with a little help from our friends.”

Noting that he feels “tremendous joy and gratitude” to be releasing this collaborative collection, Jon—who son Jake Bongiovi recently adopted a baby girl with his wife Millie Bobby Brown—added, “I can say with certainty that there is always something bigger than ME, and that’s WE.”

This isn’t the first time Jon has reflected on how his vocal cord issues have impacted his career. Last year, the “Livin on a Prayer” singer admitted that the yearslong recovery process was a lot harder than he expected—though he insisted he had no plans to give up music entirely.

“I can always write another record. I’m not worried about my ability to write another song,” he told NPR in 2024. “I could have walked away. I just haven’t had to come to that conclusion because, as I said, the process and the progress are steady.”
