Starfruit (Carambola) from Seeds to Plant

Starfruit, or carambola, is known for its distinct star-shaped cross sections and crisp, tangy flesh. Growing this unique fruit tree from seed is easier than many expect and brings a playful, tropical flair to any space.
Remove seeds from a fresh, ripe starfruit, rinse them, and plant immediately—they lose viability quickly. Place each seed about 1/2 inch deep in a moist, well-draining soil mix. Cover loosely and keep in a warm, humid environment.
Germination occurs within 1 to 2 weeks. As seedlings grow, move them to larger pots and provide ample sunlight—6 to 8 hours daily. Water regularly but avoid waterlogged conditions. Fertilize with a balanced tropical fruit fertilizer monthly.
Starfruit trees grow quickly and can start producing within 3 to 5 years. Even if you’re growing indoors, their graceful form and delicate foliage make them delightful to watch. With time and care, you might just enjoy harvesting your own homegrown stars.
