Growing Mangosteen at Home from Seed

Mangosteen, often called the “queen of fruits,” is prized for its juicy, fragrant segments and thick purple rind. While notoriously difficult to grow outside tropical climates, you can still start a mangosteen tree from seed at home if you replicate its preferred conditions.

Use seeds from a freshly harvested mangosteen—viability declines within days. Plant the seed about an inch deep in a pot with rich, organic soil, and cover with a plastic dome or bag to retain high humidity. Keep in a warm environment, ideally above 80°F (27°C).

Germination may take up to a month. Once a seedling appears, ensure it gets filtered sunlight and warm, moist air. Mangosteen plants are slow growers and may take up to 10 years to mature, but the glossy green leaves and exotic profile make it a centerpiece plant.

Fertilize lightly and regularly, avoid cold drafts, and don’t let the soil dry out. While fruiting at home is rare, nurturing such a rare plant is an impressive feat for any gardener.
