Pomelo, the ancestor of all citrus fruits, offers not only giant, juicy fruits but also an elegant citrus tree perfect for growing indoors. While it takes years to fruit, the process of growing a pomelo tree from seed is a journey rich in reward and botanical curiosity.

Extract seeds from a fresh pomelo and rinse off all pulp. Let them dry for a few hours before planting them about 1/2 inch deep in a pot filled with light, well-draining soil. Cover with plastic wrap to maintain humidity, and place in a warm, sunny spot.

Germination should occur within 2 to 3 weeks. Once seedlings emerge, remove the plastic wrap and keep the soil consistently moist. As the plants grow, transplant them into larger pots with citrus-friendly soil.

Pomelo trees love full sun, so choose the brightest spot in your home. Fertilize monthly with a citrus-specific fertilizer, and prune lightly to shape the tree. Though it may take 8 to 10 years for fruit to appear, the lush, fragrant foliage makes it a pleasant and eye-catching addition to any room or patio.
