Guava from Scratch: Grow from Seeds

Guava is one of the easiest fruit trees to grow from seed, and its lush foliage, fragrant blossoms, and nutritious fruit make it an all-around winner. Whether planted indoors or out, guava quickly becomes a beloved part of your edible landscape.

Start with ripe, organic guavas. Scoop out the seeds and wash them thoroughly to remove all pulp. Let the seeds dry for a day, then soak them in warm water for 24 hours. This helps break their dormancy and improves germination success.

Plant the seeds about half an inch deep in seed-starting mix, and place the pots in a warm, sunny location. Maintain moisture but avoid overwatering. In as little as 2 weeks, you may see the first signs of life. Once seedlings have 3 to 4 leaves, transplant them into larger containers.

Guava trees are fast growers and can start flowering and fruiting in as little as 2 to 4 years under the right conditions. They prefer full sun, slightly acidic soil, and regular watering. Prune regularly to encourage bushier growth and control size, especially for indoor settings.

Even if space is limited, guava adapts well to container growth. With a bit of attention, you’ll be rewarded with a tree that’s as productive as it is beautiful.
