Part 2: The Secret on Grace’s Phone

MY HUSBAND BROUGHT HIS MISTRESS TO OUR CHARITY GALA — BUT MY NINE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER HAD SAVED THE PROOF

Part 2: The Secret on Grace’s Phone

Grace handed me her phone.

My hands were trembling as I pressed play.

The video showed the hallway outside Derek’s home office.

Grace had apparently started recording several days earlier after hearing her father arguing with someone.

The image was shaky.

Then Derek’s voice came through the recording.

“We can’t keep transferring money like this. Victoria will eventually notice.”

A second voice answered.

Sienna.

“She won’t. You control the accounts.”

Derek laughed.

“Not all of them.”

I looked at Grace.

She whispered, “Keep watching.”

The recording continued.

Derek mentioned the mysterious company Rachel had warned me about.

RZ Consulting LLC.

Then came the sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“The money isn’t going to Sienna.”

I stared at the screen.

“What?”

Grace’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t understand either.”

On the recording, Derek continued speaking.

“The transfers are going through RZ so the investors won’t see that we’re covering the losses.”

Sienna sounded alarmed.

“And if Victoria finds out?”

“She won’t.”

“What if Rachel tells her?”

Derek became silent.

Then he said,

“Rachel won’t say anything. She knows what happens if she does.”

I stopped the video.

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Derek hadn’t simply been hiding an affair.

He had been moving hundreds of thousands of dollars through a shell company to conceal losses in his business.

And apparently, he had been using our family account to help cover them.

My attorney’s letter suddenly felt much heavier inside my purse.

I had hired her that morning.

She had already prepared the paperwork for divorce and requested an emergency review of our marital finances.

But I had one more question.

“Grace, where did you get the rest of this?”

She pointed toward the ballroom.

“From Dad’s tablet.”

My heart stopped.

“You accessed his tablet?”

“No. He left it open in his office yesterday. I saw the messages.”

She lowered her voice.

“I copied them because I thought you might need them.”

Nine years old.

My daughter had been carrying an adult burden she should never have known existed.

I hugged her tightly.

“You did the right thing by telling me. But from now on, you don’t investigate anything. That’s my job.”

She nodded.

Across the ballroom, Derek was still standing beside Sienna.

He looked confident again.

He had no idea that his entire story was about to collapse.

I walked toward him.

He smiled nervously.

“Victoria, this isn’t the place.”

“I agree.”

I handed him the envelope.

He looked at it.

“What is this?”

“From my attorney.”

His face changed as he opened it.

Divorce petition.

Temporary financial restrictions.

Requests for a complete accounting of marital assets.

And a formal notice preserving relevant business and financial records.

Sienna leaned closer.

“What did she do?”

Derek looked at me.

“You’re divorcing me?”

“Yes.”

“You’re serious?”

“Completely.”

He lowered his voice.

“Victoria, think about what you’re doing.”

“I have.”

His eyes moved toward Grace.

“You’re going to destroy this family over a misunderstanding?”

That was when I finally lost the last bit of sympathy I had for him.

“You destroyed our family when you decided your wife and daughter were people you could lie to.”

He grabbed my arm.

Grace immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t touch my mom.”

Derek froze.

The ballroom had gone silent.

I gently moved Grace behind me.

Then Rachel arrived.

She carried a folder.

“I believe everyone deserves to see this.”

Derek stared at her.

“Rachel, don’t.”

She placed the folder on the table.

Inside were bank statements, invoices, corporate transfers, and records connecting RZ Consulting to Derek’s business.

The nearly $400,000 wasn’t the end.

The total exposure was closer to $1.8 million.

Money had been moved through multiple accounts to conceal business losses from investors and creditors.

Some transfers had come directly from accounts Victoria and Derek shared.

Derek’s face turned pale.

Sienna stepped away from him.

“You told me you owned everything.”

“I do.”

“No,” Rachel said quietly. “You don’t.”

She pointed toward the documents.

“Victoria’s attorney has already requested the records.”

Derek looked at me.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

I looked toward Grace.

“She found the truth.”

At that moment, several phones across the ballroom began vibrating.

One of Derek’s investors had apparently received the same financial documentation.

Then another.

Then another.

Within minutes, the celebration had transformed into chaos.

Derek’s business partners demanded answers.

His attorney pulled him aside.

Sienna disappeared through a side entrance.

And my husband stood alone beneath the crystal chandelier, holding divorce papers in one hand and the evidence of his own deception in the other.

He looked at me.

“Victoria, please.”

I shook my head.

“You had eleven years to tell me the truth.”

He swallowed.

“And now?”

“Now the truth doesn’t belong to me anymore.”

I took Grace’s hand.

We walked toward the exit.

Behind us, Derek called my name.

I didn’t turn around.

Outside, the Chicago air was cold and clean.

Grace looked up at me.

“Are we going to be okay?”

I squeezed her hand.

“Yes.”

“What happens to Dad?”

I paused.

“He’ll have to answer for his own choices.”

Grace looked down at her phone.

“I wish I hadn’t had to record everything.”

I knelt beside her.

“You were trying to protect me.”

She nodded.

“But Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Next time something is wrong, can we just tell an adult?”

I smiled through my tears.

“Absolutely.”

That night, I put her phone on the kitchen counter.

Then I put my own phone beside it.

For eleven years, I had believed protecting a family meant keeping its secrets.

I finally understood the opposite was true.

A family isn’t protected by lies.

It’s protected by the people willing to tell the truth when telling it costs something.

And as Grace fell asleep upstairs, my attorney sent me one final message.

The court has accepted the emergency filing. The accounts are being reviewed.

I looked through the window toward the dark Chicago skyline.

Derek had walked into that gala believing he could display his mistress in front of everyone and still control what happened next.

He was wrong.

Because the secret he’d worked so hard to hide hadn’t been discovered by a private investigator.

It hadn’t been uncovered by a rival.

It had been sitting quietly inside the phone of the little girl he underestimated.

And that tiny recording had given me the one thing I needed most:

the courage to finally walk away.
