Part 2: The Secret Behind the East Wing

THE MAFIA BOSS AND THE MAID — BUT THE WOMAN IN THE FORBIDDEN WING KNEW HER NAME

Part 2: The Secret Behind the East Wing

Dante stood between me and the woman.

“Isabella,” he said again, his voice barely controlled. “How are you alive?”

She gave him a bitter smile.

“Because you never knew the whole story.”

I looked from one to the other.

“Who is she?”

Neither answered.

Isabella stepped into the light.

She was older than the photograph I later saw, but there was no doubt she was the same woman.

Eight years earlier, Isabella had supposedly died in a car accident.

Dante had blamed himself.

According to the story he’d believed, she had been targeted because of his enemies.

But Isabella had never died.

She had been hidden.

And the person who arranged it had been Dante’s own father.

“Your father discovered that I knew about the accounts,” Isabella explained. “Money was disappearing from the family businesses. I found proof.”

Dante’s expression hardened.

“My father died eight years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

“Because his men threatened my family. And because one person convinced me that staying hidden was the only way to keep you alive.”

“Who?”

Isabella looked at me.

“Elena.”

My stomach dropped.

“What does she have to do with me?”

Isabella reached into her coat and removed an old photograph.

It showed a much younger woman standing beside a hospital bed.

I recognized the woman immediately.

My mother.

My hands began shaking.

“She knew your mother,” Isabella said.

“My mother worked at the hospital where I was born.”

Dante looked at me.

“You never told me that.”

“Because I didn’t know it mattered.”

Isabella explained that eight years earlier, my mother had unknowingly helped protect her after the supposed accident.

She had seen documents that proved Isabella was alive.

Before she could report what she knew, someone threatened her.

My mother left Chicago soon afterward.

I had always believed she simply wanted a quieter life.

Now I realized she had been running.

But Isabella wasn’t finished.

She pulled another document from her coat.

“This is why I came back.”

Dante took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his face changed.

“What is this?”

“A transfer agreement.”

The document showed ownership interests in several Rossi businesses.

But the signatures weren’t from Dante.

They belonged to his father.

And beneath them was a clause transferring control to a hidden beneficiary if Dante ever married.

Dante looked at me.

“Why would my father create this?”

Isabella’s voice became quiet.

“Because he knew someone would eventually try to control you through your wife.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

She looked toward the east wing.

“Your uncle.”

Dante immediately reached for his phone.

But Isabella stopped him.

“Don’t call anyone.”

“Why?”

“Because if your uncle learns I’m alive, he’ll disappear.”

Dante stared at her.

For the first time, I saw something beneath his reputation.

Fear.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for everyone around him.

Then footsteps sounded outside.

Marco entered.

“Mr. Rossi, we have a problem.”

Dante turned.

“What?”

“Someone accessed the east-wing security system.”

His eyes moved toward Isabella.

“Who?”

Marco hesitated.

“The system registered an employee credential.”

My heart stopped.

“Whose?”

Marco looked directly at me.

“Ms. Vasquez’s.”

I shook my head.

“I’ve never been in the east wing.”

“I know,” Dante said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

He took my hand.

“Someone is using your identity.”

Within minutes, Dante ordered the security records preserved and contacted his attorney.

No one was allowed to destroy or alter anything.

Then he asked me to stay in the study.

I watched as the security team reviewed the footage.

A hooded figure appeared on camera.

They entered using my employee identification.

They went directly to a locked cabinet.

Then they removed a small black case.

Isabella watched the screen.

“That case.”

Dante looked at her.

“What about it?”

“It contains the original ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The one proving where the missing money went.”

The room fell silent.

Then the hooded figure turned toward the camera.

For a fraction of a second, the face became visible.

Dante froze.

“So did I.

It was Marco.

The estate manager.

The man who had hired me.

The man who had collected my phone on my first day.

He had been working for Dante’s uncle.

But before anyone could confront him, another security alert appeared.

Marco had already left the estate.

Dante immediately called his attorney and instructed him to preserve the evidence and notify the appropriate authorities.

Then he turned toward Isabella.

“Why Elena?”

Isabella looked at me.

“Because your father wasn’t protecting only me.”

She opened the final envelope.

Inside was an old letter.

My mother’s handwriting was unmistakable.

It explained that years earlier, she had discovered a connection between the Rossi family’s missing money and a network of shell companies.

She had kept copies of the evidence.

And she had entrusted those copies to one person.

Isabella.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

If anything happens to me, find Elena. She deserves to know why her life was never as ordinary as she believed.

I couldn’t speak.

My entire life had suddenly become a story I had never been told.

Dante stepped beside me.

“You don’t have to face this alone.”

I looked at him.

“You said nobody had touched you in eight years.”

“Yes.”

“Were you afraid to love again?”

His eyes softened.

“I was afraid anyone I loved would become a target.”

I reached for his hand.

“This isn’t your fault.”

He looked down at our hands.

For the first time since I’d entered the Rossi mansion, the terrifying man everyone feared looked simply human.

Isabella quietly stepped toward the door.

Dante stopped her.

“Where are you going?”

“To finish what I started eight years ago.”

She handed him the original ledger.

“Now you have proof.”

The following weeks changed everything.

The financial records were turned over for formal investigation.

The shell companies were traced.

The missing funds were accounted for.

Marco disappeared from the Rossi estate and was later located by investigators.

Dante’s uncle was forced to answer questions about the financial scheme.

Isabella was finally able to live openly again.

And I resigned from my position as a maid.

Not because Dante asked me to.

Because I had realized I wanted a life where my identity wasn’t defined by cleaning someone else’s house.

Dante offered to help me start over.

I refused his money.

Instead, he helped me secure a position managing a charitable program connected to the Rossi foundation.

It was work I could be proud of.

Months later, I stood in the same conservatory where everything had begun.

Dante walked toward me.

“No black dress tonight?”

I smiled.

“No apron either.”

He smiled back.

“Good.”

I looked through the windows at the Chicago skyline.

“So what happens now?”

Dante took my hand.

“Now you decide.”

Those three words brought me back to the night he had stopped Vanessa from hurting me.

He had given me a choice then.

He gave me one again now.

And this time, I chose him.

Not because he was powerful.

Not because he was feared.

Not because he could solve every problem with money.

I chose him because, when he finally learned the truth, he didn’t try to control my life.

He gave it back to me.

And the woman everyone had believed dead?

Isabella became the final witness who helped expose the secrets that had poisoned the Rossi family for years.

The forbidden east wing was eventually reopened.

The locked rooms were emptied.

The hidden records were preserved.

And the antique strap that had once terrified everyone in that house was removed forever.

The mansion finally became quiet.

Not the dangerous kind of quiet.

The peaceful kind.

The kind that comes when secrets no longer have anywhere left to hide.
