Part 2: The Secret Behind RZ Consulting
MY HUSBAND BROUGHT HIS MISTRESS TO OUR CHARITY GALA — BUT MY NINE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER HAD ALREADY FOUND HIS SECRET
Part 2: The Secret Behind RZ Consulting
The man stopped several feet from me.
“Mrs. Hayes?”
“Yes.”
He handed me the black folder.
“My name is Michael Reed. I’m an independent forensic accountant.”
I looked at the folder but didn’t open it.
“Who hired you?”
“Your cousin Rachel.”
My heart pounded.
“What’s inside?”
Michael glanced toward Derek.
“Documents showing where your husband’s money has been going for the last two years.”
I opened the folder.
The first page showed a company registration.
RZ Consulting LLC.
The listed owner wasn’t Derek.
It was Sienna Carter.
My stomach turned.
The next pages showed payments from our joint holding company to RZ Consulting.
Consulting fees.
Travel expenses.
Luxury hotel charges.
Apartment payments.
Nearly four hundred thousand dollars.
But then I saw something worse.
A second company.
Horizon Community Partners.
Its listed director was Derek’s mother.
Michael lowered his voice.
“The money moved through RZ Consulting first. Then portions were transferred into Horizon.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because Horizon received charitable donations.”
I stared at him.
Our family foundation.
The foundation Derek and I had established to help families in Chicago.
Money donated by ordinary people.
Money intended for scholarships, food programs, and emergency housing.
I turned another page.
The numbers didn’t match.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars had disappeared.
Derek hadn’t just been cheating on me.
He had been moving money through shell companies and disguising some of it as charitable expenses.
I looked across the ballroom.
Derek was still standing beside Sienna.
He hadn’t noticed the folder yet.
Then Grace whispered,
“Mom, that’s why Daddy told me not to tell you.”
I knelt beside her.
“What else did he say?”
She hesitated.
“He told me that if you ever found out, we’d have to leave our house.”
My heart broke.
“You should never have been carrying this alone.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
I hugged her tightly.
Across the room, Derek finally noticed Michael.
His face changed immediately.
He walked toward us.
“What is this?”
I stood.
“Your accounting.”
Derek glanced at the folder.
Then at Michael.
“You have no business being here.”
Michael remained calm.
“Actually, I have every reason to be here.”
Derek’s voice dropped.
“Victoria, we can discuss this privately.”
“No.”
He looked around at the guests.
“Not here.”
I held up the first document.
“You brought your mistress into our charity gala.”
His jaw tightened.
“And now you want privacy?”
Sienna stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
I turned toward her.
“You own RZ Consulting.”
Her face went pale.
Derek immediately said, “That doesn’t mean anything.”
I looked at him.
“Then explain the $386,000 transferred into her company.”
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Derek’s mother rushed toward us.
“Don’t you dare accuse my son of stealing!”
Michael opened another section of the folder.
“We’re not making accusations. We’re documenting transactions.”
He placed several documents on the table.
“Here are the invoices.”
Then another.
“Here are the bank transfers.”
Another.
“And these are copies of the foundation’s accounting records.”
Silence.
One of the charity’s largest donors stepped forward.
“I want an explanation.”
Derek couldn’t answer.
Then Grace quietly pulled my hand.
“Mom.”
“What?”
She pointed toward the giant presentation screen.
“Remember the video Dad told me never to open?”
I froze.
“What video?”
She reached into her little purse and pulled out her phone.
“I saved it.”
My heart stopped.
“What video, Grace?”
She pressed the screen.
A security recording appeared.
It showed Derek entering a private office three months earlier.
Sienna followed him.
Then Derek opened a drawer and removed a thick envelope.
He handed it to her.
The timestamp was visible.
One of the dates matched a $75,000 transfer from the foundation.
Derek stared at the screen.
“No.”
Grace looked at him.
“You told me I wasn’t supposed to tell Mom.”
His face turned white.
I looked at my daughter.
“You did the right thing.”
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Two investigators entered with Rachel.
Rachel walked directly toward me.
“Victoria, I’m sorry it took this long.”
She handed me another document.
“This is the bank’s tracing report.”
I read the final page.
The missing money hadn’t simply gone to Sienna.
A large portion had been transferred into an account controlled by Derek himself.
The affair had been a distraction.
The real plan had been financial.
Derek had been preparing to move money out of the marriage before filing for divorce.
He had expected me to discover Sienna first.
He wanted me angry.
He wanted me distracted.
And most importantly, he wanted me to sign documents without examining the finances.
I looked at my husband.
“You planned to leave me with nothing.”
He couldn’t answer.
Sienna began crying.
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Derek turned toward her.
“What did you say?”
She covered her mouth.
The room went silent again.
I understood.
Sienna hadn’t known everything.
Derek had lied to both of us.
For years, he had built his life around controlling what other people knew.
Tonight, that control was gone.
I took the letter from my attorney out of my purse.
Then I placed it in Derek’s hands.
“Happy anniversary.”
He stared down at it.
“Victoria…”
“It’s divorce papers.”
His eyes lifted.
“You can’t do this.”
“I already did.”
He looked toward Grace.
She was standing beside me, holding her little phone.
For once, Derek had no explanation.
No excuse.
No story.
Only evidence.
I took my daughter’s hand.
As we walked toward the ballroom doors, I heard Derek call my name.
I didn’t turn around.
Because eleven years earlier, I had promised to stand beside him through everything.
Tonight, he finally learned the difference between a wife who stood beside him—
and a woman who refused to stand behind his lies.
And as the doors closed behind us, the investigators remained inside with Derek, Sienna, and the family records.
The life he had tried so carefully to protect was no longer mine to save.
It was his to answer for.
