PART 2 — THE RECORDING HE LEFT BEHIND

PART 2 — THE RECORDING HE LEFT BEHIND

Daniel’s voice continued through the cracked phone.

“Claire, if you’re hearing this, don’t trust anyone who tells you my death was an accident.”

I looked at his brother, Michael.

He had stopped backing away.

Sophia stood beside me, crying silently.

Daniel continued.

“Michael has been taking money from the company for almost two years.”

A murmur moved through the cemetery.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Then Daniel mentioned something worse.

“He discovered I was going to expose him.”

Michael suddenly stepped forward.

“This is fake.”

Sophia shook her head.

“I watched Daniel record it.”

Michael looked at her with fury.

“You knew?”

“I knew enough.”

The recording continued.

“I found transfers into an account connected to Michael’s business partner. I also found forged documents using Claire’s signature.”

My stomach turned.

Daniel had never told me anything.

He had apparently been investigating his own brother in secret.

Then his voice became quieter.

“If something happens to me, the police need to see the file in my office.”

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then a police detective stepped forward.

“Mrs. Morgan, Daniel contacted our department two days ago.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“He asked us to investigate financial fraud involving a member of his family.”

Michael’s face went white.

The detective showed me a photograph.

Daniel had been photographed leaving his office with a black folder.

The same folder was now missing.

Sophia suddenly spoke.

“It’s not missing.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Daniel gave it to me.”

She reached inside her coat and pulled out the folder.

“I was supposed to give it to Claire after the funeral.”

Michael tried to grab it.

Two officers immediately stopped him.

Inside were bank statements, contracts, emails and copies of forged documents.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Michael had been secretly diverting company money.

When Daniel discovered it, Michael had confronted him.

That confrontation had turned into something far more serious.

Daniel had recorded the conversation because he feared his brother might try to silence him.

The investigation eventually uncovered the truth.

Michael was arrested.

The company recovered much of the stolen money.

And Daniel’s death was officially reopened as a criminal investigation.

But there was one thing I couldn’t stop thinking about.

Sophia.

After the funeral, I found her standing alone beside Daniel’s grave.

“I owe you an apology,” I said.

She looked at me.

“For the slap?”

“Yes.”

She smiled sadly.

“Daniel told me you would probably hit me.”

I almost laughed.

“He knew me that well?”

“He loved you.”

Those words broke something inside me.

I had spent twenty-two years believing Sophia was the woman who threatened my marriage.

But she had actually been protecting my husband.

And when Daniel knew he might not survive, he trusted the woman I hated most to deliver the truth to me.

Months later, the investigation revealed that Daniel had been preparing everything for weeks.

He knew someone close to him was dangerous.

He knew his family was hiding something.

And he knew I might never believe Sophia.

So he left one final message.

Not to accuse her.

Not to defend himself.

But to make sure the truth reached me.

I kept the cracked phone.

I kept the recording.

And I kept the white rose Sophia had placed on his coffin.

Because that day taught me something I would never forget.

Sometimes the person standing beside the coffin isn’t the person who deserves your anger.

Sometimes they’re the one who carried the truth there.

And sometimes…

the final words of the person you lost are the only thing standing between you and the person who caused it.
