Part 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE FIRE

I ran upstairs through the smoke.

The heat became unbearable almost immediately.

“Lily!”

“Quinn!”

Her voice came from the second floor.

I followed it.

The hallway was filling with smoke, and flames were spreading along the walls.

Then I saw her.

Lily was trapped behind her bedroom door.

The handle wouldn’t move.

“Stay back!”

Quinn grabbed a heavy chair from the hallway and used it to force the damaged door open enough for Lily to squeeze through.

“Come on!”

Lily grabbed her hand.

They ran.

But halfway down the stairs, part of the ceiling collapsed behind them.

Quinn pulled Lily against the wall.

Seconds later, several bikers burst through the front entrance.

Grant “Bear” Callahan was first.

“LILY!”

He spotted his daughter.

Then he saw Quinn.

For one stunned second, nobody moved.

Grant grabbed Lily and carried her outside.

Then he turned toward Quinn.

“Who are you?”

Quinn couldn’t answer.

She was coughing too hard.

Grant wrapped his leather jacket around her shoulders.

“You saved my daughter.”

Quinn looked down.

“I just couldn’t leave her.”

Then Lily suddenly grabbed her father’s arm.

“Dad, Quinn knows.”

Grant frowned.

“Knows what?”

Lily pointed toward the burning second floor.

“The maps.”

Grant’s expression changed.

“What maps?”

Quinn looked at him.

“I found her notebook.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“Show me.”

The fire department eventually contained the blaze.

Investigators discovered something disturbing.

The fire hadn’t started accidentally.

Several containers of fuel had been placed around the building.

Someone had deliberately targeted the clubhouse.

But Quinn had noticed something else.

Before the fire began, she had seen a man leaving through the basement entrance.

She described him.

Grant immediately recognized him.

A former club member who had disappeared months earlier.

But that wasn’t the biggest revelation.

The police later discovered security footage showing the man entering the building earlier that evening.

He hadn’t come to burn the clubhouse.

He had been searching for something.

Something hidden beneath the floor.

Grant looked at Quinn.

“How did you know Lily needed escape routes?”

Quinn hesitated.

Then she reached into her backpack.

Inside was a small envelope.

“I found this before I met Lily.”

Grant opened it.

His face changed.

The envelope contained an old photograph of his club from fifteen years earlier.

One person had been circled in red.

Grant stared at the photograph.

“That man…”

Quinn nodded.

“He’s the same man I saw tonight.”

Grant looked at her.

“Where did you get this?”

Quinn finally told him the truth.

She hadn’t chosen the basement randomly.

Her father had once worked at the clubhouse.

Before he disappeared, he had told Quinn that if anything ever happened to him, she should find Grant Callahan.

Grant stared at her.

“Who was your father?”

Quinn swallowed.

“Daniel Reed.”

The room went silent.

Grant knew that name.

Daniel had been one of the original members of his club.

He had disappeared fifteen years earlier after accusing someone inside the organization of stealing money.

Everyone had assumed he ran away.

But Grant had never believed it.

Quinn pulled out another photograph.

On the back was a handwritten message:

Grant—protect my daughter. The person who betrayed me is still close to you.

Grant looked around at his brothers.

The fire had destroyed part of the clubhouse.

But it had revealed something much more dangerous.

The enemy wasn’t outside.

He had been inside the club for fifteen years.

Grant placed one hand on Quinn’s shoulder.

“You’re not homeless anymore.”

Quinn looked up.

“You mean…?”

“You’ve got a family now.”

Lily smiled and reached for Quinn’s hand.

And for the first time in years, Quinn stopped looking for somewhere to hide.

Because the girl everyone had called invisible had finally been seen.

But Grant knew the truth.

The fire hadn’t been an ending.

It had been a warning.

And somewhere in Chicago, the man who had destroyed Daniel’s life had just learned that Daniel’s daughter was alive.
