A leaked behind-the-scenes video has raised questions about whether the show was overly scripted. Instead of calming the backlash, the host’s sharp response has only intensified the debate

This Morning’s Craig Doyle has branded the competition ‘rubbish’ after the ITV programme received a National Television Awards’ nomination.

The nominations for the annual ceremony, being held this year in London’s O2 on Wednesday, September 10, were confirmed Tuesday morning (August 19).

Returning to present the NTAs for the fifth consecutive year is Joel Dommett, who recently presented This Morning with Emma Willis.

Last year saw the programme, normally presented by Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, lose the Best Daytime award to Bradley Walsh’s The Chase.

In 2023, BBC’s The Repair Shop, which was fronted by Jay Blades prior to his departure last year, took home the trophy.

Not winning the award since Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby’s exits, This Morning was on a 13-year winning streak prior to the upset two years ago.

This year sees This Morning going up against Loose Women, James Martin’s Saturday Morning and Scam Interceptors, the only BBC series nominated.

With Cat and Ben currently on their holidays, Craig and Sian Welby have been tasked with hosting the show this week.

Revealing the news of This Morning’s nomination, Craig said: “I just want to say a huge thank you to the team and everyone here. I can’t believe everyone who works here and they work so hard, they couldn’t have done it without all of your support, so thank you so much,” he said.

Sian added: “There’s so many different options of what to watch. We’re very grateful you watch this show and keeping everybody on air.”

Making a playful dig at the other series attempting to win the prize, Craig stated: “The other stuff is rubbish that’s out there. This is the good stuff. This is the juice right here.”

Prior to playing a montage of the best moments from the series over the past year, Sian said that they ‘hope to keep brightening your mornings in the mad ways that we do’.

With the winners of the NTAs determined through a public vote, Craig made a cheeky request to viewers watching at home.

“Just keep doing it, just use fake names. Am I allowed to say that,” he joked.

Also representing This Morning at the NTAs is Alison Hammond, who presents Friday episodes of This Morning with Dermot O’Leary, who is up for the Best Presenter award.

Alison will be hoping to put an end to Ant and Dec’s efforts to win the award for the 24th year in a row, with Gary Linekar, Claudia Winkleman and Stacy Solomon also nominated.
