Naga Munchetty revealed on BBC Breakfast that tennis legend Bjorn Borg has had a particularly difficult year following his battle with prostate cancer. The Swedish star, now 69, admitted that he approaches life with a new perspective, saying he now takes life “day by day, year by year,” following his health scare.

In his new autobiography, Borg opened up about the illness, disclosing that the cancer was “at its most advanced stage”. However, he stressed that he remains determined to keep fighting, with the former world champion insisting that he would “fight every day like it’s a Wimbledon final”.

During Thursday’s broadcast, Naga explained: “The former professional tennis player, Bjorn Borg, has been talking to the BBC about his treatment for an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

“The five-time Wimbledon champion revealed his illness in the final chapter of his much-anticipated autobiography. He said he requires regular scans and is currently in remission, and that he plans to fight the illness like it’s a Wimbledon final.”

In the studio, they played a brief clip of the tennis star, speaking about his autobiography and his cancer treatment, the Express reports.

In the clip Bjorn can be heard saying: “I spoke to the doctor, and he said, ‘This is really, really bad, but it’s done’. And he said, ‘But you have these sleeping cancer cells in your body’.”

The sporting legend went on to reflect on the uncertainty of life in remission, stating: “It is going to be a fight in the future, and I hope I am going to be ok, I might be ok, I might not be ok.”

He continued: “So every six months I will test myself. And right now, I did my last test two weeks ago, so I’m okay. I take it day by day, year by year, hopefully. It’s the thing you have to live with.”

After the clip, co-host Charlie Stayt chimed in: “He is an iconic figure in tennis, and we’ll hear more of that interview, where he talked about his life, his career, and now his medical condition and the various problems he’s faced through his life.

“We’ll hear more of that a little later on.”

Bjorn revealed that he first received his diagnosis in 2023, describing it as an “extremely aggressive” form of cancer which was already “at its most advanced stage.”

In 2024, he underwent surgery, and since then the tennis legend has shared the positive news that he is now in remission.
