Good Morning Britain Didn’t Just Pause for Breaking News — It Froze Mid-Broadcast as the EU Dropped a Bombshell That Could Reshape the UK’s Steel Industry

The segment didn’t shift. It snapped. One moment, Charlotte Hawkins was hosting. The next, the studio went still — not for drama, but for damage. The EU’s proposed 50% import tariffs weren’t just numbers. They were a warning. Union leaders called it “the sector’s biggest ever crisis.” A reporter called it “an existential threat.” And in that pause, the broadcast stopped being about headlines. It became a front-row seat to something unraveling in real time

Good Morning Britain shared a major update regarding EU import tariffs this morning (October 8), with reporters and experts both agreeing the rumoured plans could have a “catastrophic” affect on the nation.

The announcement comes as union leaders say plans outlined by the EU could hit the UK steel industry with import tariffs of 50 per cent.

Charlotte Hawkins, who was hosting the programme, said industry leaders have even stated this could be the “sector’s biggest ever crisis.”

Nitya Rajan, a reporter on the show, was in agreement with Charlotte, adding that this will “disproportionately damage the whole industry.”

She went on to point out how the announcement comes in the background of tariffs introduced by US President, Donald Trump.

The journalist reiterated Charlotte’s statement, confessing the update is “causing real concern for British jobs.”

A statement from the Community Union was then shared on air, which stated that new measures introduced by the EU represent an “existential threat to the steel industry.”

They added: “Europe is by far the largest destination for UK steel exports and losing access to this market would have a catastrophic impact on British jobs.”

Now, as a result, lobbyists for the steel industry are calling on Starmer and his government to try and buy the new market as they said that it is “potentially devastating” if they have nowhere to sell the steel,” the Express reported.

They are also calling for the government to call for preferential treatment for the UK but Starmer has not given details on what the negotiations will lead to, despite saying that they “are in talks with the EU.”

Fans of the ITV show were less than impressed and many had little hope in the UK Prime Minister making matters any better.

Posting to X/Twitter, one viewer wrote: “Will this see Starmer riding off into the sunset to save the day? Call me a cynic but sounds more like the start of another dodgy deal.”

Another sarcastically penned: “Starmers great EU reset is going exactly as planned.”
