After four long years away, Michael C. Hall is finally back in the driver’s seat after the success of the Dexter: Original Sin prequel series on Paramount+ with Showtime. However, is Dexter: Resurrection, the long-awaited follow-up to New Blood, all we’re hoping it will be and more? According to its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, the answer is a resounding, “Yes!”

“This is the Dexter we’ve wanted to see return since the original show ended in 2013,” said critic Cade Onder from Comicbook.com, adding that Dexter: Resurrection is “filled with thrills, dark humor, a compelling and dramatic story, and another standout performance from Michael C. Hall.” Tania Hussain from Collider was another who had high praise for the series, writing in her review:

“It’s not just more Dexter — it’s better Dexter. The writing is sharper, the characters are much more layered, and the moral dilemmas hit harder than ever.”

Featuring a star-studded cast that also includes Peter Dinklage, David Zayas, Jack Alcott, James Remar, Uma Thurman, Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, and David Dastmalchian, Dexter: Resurrection picks up from where New Blood left off, and sees Dexter awaken from a coma after being shot by Harrison, only to find his son gone. Realizing the weight of what he put him through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But when Miami Metro’s Angel Batista arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness, they soon find themselves deeper than ever imagined. If that doesn’t get you excited for Resurrection, then we don’t know what will, because it sounds absolutely awesome.

‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Captures the Same Magic As the Original Series

Once more helmed by Clyde Phillips, these are exactly the kind of reviews we were hoping to read following the bad taste left in our mouths by New Blood back when it concluded in 2022. That didn’t exactly end things on a high note for fans, who felt betrayed by the series for not only the way it handled the legacy of the original show, but for the way it ended, too. Thankfully, Phillips and company managed to get Dexter out of the little pickle called death, and the results, says Chris Bennion from The Daily Telegraph, are spectacular – especially when you add Dinklage to the mix:

“Watching Hall and Dinklage go head-to-head as the series develops will make the whole endeavour worthwhile; the less said the better about Uma Thurman’s pantomime turn as Dinklage’s fixer.”

Meg Watson from The Sydney Morning Herald also chimed in to say that while “Resurrection doesn’t hit the highs of the original series, it does recapture the magic of what made it great.” That’s music to our ears, because that magic was sorely lacking in New Blood, so we’re glad it’s back. Critic Dustin Rowles also echoed those same sentiments, adding: “It’s a true return to form for the series, and it’s a real pleasure to have him back in our lives.”

You can definitely say that again, because as good as Patrick Gibson’s performance was in Original Sin was, it’ll be nice to see Hall slip into the shoes of our favorite vigilante serial killer one more time. You can check out the first two episodes of Dexter: Resurrection when they hit Paramount+ with Showtime tomorrow, July 11, and look for the remaining eight to drop weekly until its conclusion on September 5.
