In 1984, “Missing You” by John Waite emerged as a timeless hit, blending pop-rock with the raw ache of lost love. More than a decade later, the legendary country duo Brooks & Dunn decided to bring the song back, infusing it with their signature country flavor in the album Tight Rope, released in September 1999.

When Country Meets Pop-Rock

Brooks & Dunn didn’t simply cover the track — they “countrified” it, turning it into a ballad with a strong Nashville soul. Ronnie Dunn’s powerful, aching vocals combined with Kix Brooks’ expressive style created a version that felt both familiar and refreshingly new. This blend made “Missing You” one of the few standout moments in Tight Rope.

Chart Performance and Limitations

Although the song drew attention, Brooks & Dunn’s cover of “Missing You” only reached #15 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs, #6 on Canada’s RPM Country Tracks, and peaked at #75 on the Billboard Hot 100. While respectable, these numbers were modest compared to the duo’s earlier streak of massive hits.

The album Tight Rope itself went down as the least commercially successful record of their career. It was the first Brooks & Dunn album that failed to achieve either gold or platinum certification from the RIAA.
