Later in the show, Reid and Balls spoke with Debbie Duncan, mother of 19-year-old Jay Slater, who tragically died after going missing during a holiday in Tenerife last summer. Since her son’s death, Duncan has faced a barrage of online abuse and conspiracy theories. She is now advocating for the introduction of “Jay’s Law,” legislation aimed at protecting grieving families from online harassment.

Jay went missing while on his first trip abroad with friends. After a 29-day search, his body was discovered by a mountain rescue team in the steep Juan Lopez ravine. An inquest later confirmed that he died from head injuries sustained in an accidental fall. Despite the tragic circumstances, Duncan and her family were subjected to persistent online speculation, including false claims that Jay had been murdered, involved in a drug deal, or that his mother was somehow complicit. She even received doctored images of her son while he was missing, amplifying her distress.

Speaking on the programme, Duncan said, “It’s difficult. The pain of losing a child… just trying to fight through it, but it’s not been easy, especially with all the noise in the background that continues on a daily basis. The dark side of social media reared its head… It needs to stop.”
