Richard Madeley Misses GMB as Paul Brand Steps In Temporarily

Good Morning Britain viewers were left surprised on Monday morning when Richard Madeley did not appear alongside Susanna Reid as expected. Madeley, one of the longest-serving faces of British breakfast television, was reportedly unwell, prompting a last-minute reshuffle on the GMB sofa.

In his place, ITV News UK editor Paul Brand stepped into the co-host role for the day. Reid opened the programme with a warm message for her absent colleague: “Richard Madeley, due to be on air this morning, is a little bit poorly. So get well soon, Richard, watching from home — as Paul Brand takes your hot seat.”

Brand, who regularly presents ITV’s Tonight programme, responded with good humor, joking about taking over Madeley’s role: “I’ve never sat next to you before, Susanna, so fresh territory for me.” The pair shared light-hearted banter throughout the show, putting viewers at ease despite the unexpected change.

Brand had previously hinted at his temporary stint on GMB via social media, posting a photo with co-host Ranvir Singh and writing, “Back on @gmb tomorrow and Tuesday, 6–9am. Not short of news!! See you then.” Audience reactions on social media were overwhelmingly positive, with many welcoming his presence.

ITV has not released further details about Madeley’s condition, but he is understood to be recuperating at home. Brand is expected to remain in the co-host seat until Madeley returns to the programme.
