Kate Garraway Recalls Emotional First Date With Husband Derek Draper and Reflects on Life After His Passing
Kate Garraway has opened up about the very beginning of her relationship with her late husband, Derek Draper, sharing tender memories of their first date as she continues navigating life after his death earlier this year.
During a recent appearance on GB News with presenter Gloria De Piero, Garraway reflected on the moment that changed the course of her life. She described the early stages of their romance with warmth and humor, recalling how Draper arrived late, flustered, and “utterly unlike anyone I had ever met,” yet still managed to win her over almost immediately.
According to Garraway, that first date was far from perfect, but it was unforgettable. She recounted how Draper, then a former political adviser rebuilding his career, spoke openly and passionately about life, purpose, and second chances. His honesty, she said, was disarming — and ultimately irresistible.
Garraway also admitted that, at the time, she had been hesitant about dating again and unsure whether she was ready for a committed relationship. Draper changed that within hours. “He made me laugh, he made me think, and he made me feel seen,” she said. “By the end of the evening, I knew something extraordinary had begun.”
The couple went on to marry in 2005 and welcomed two children. Their life together was profoundly altered in 2020 when Draper contracted a severe case of COVID-19, leading to life-changing health complications. Garraway became his primary caregiver until his death earlier this year.
Speaking with De Piero, Garraway acknowledged that revisiting their early memories is both painful and comforting. She emphasized that sharing these stories helps her honor Draper’s legacy while also reminding herself of the joy they built together before tragedy struck.
When asked whether she imagines herself dating again someday, Garraway responded with honesty. She said she remains open to the idea of finding companionship in the future, but she is not actively pursuing a new relationship — nor does she feel ready. “It’s not about replacing Derek. It’s about finding my footing again,” she said. “Right now, I’m just learning how to live in a world where he isn’t.”
Garraway added that she still feels deeply connected to Draper and is taking life “one day at a time,” focusing on her children, her work, and her own emotional recovery.
Her reflections offer a rare and intimate look at love, loss, and the long, often complicated process of healing after profound grief — and her story continues to resonate with audiences who followed her family’s journey over the past four years.
