Dr Hilary Jones Reflects on Being “Tipsy” Live on ITV’s Lorraine Amid Upcoming Schedule Changes
Dr Hilary Jones, a long-standing medical expert on ITV’s Lorraine, has shared a humorous recollection of a time he appeared on the programme slightly intoxicated. The 72-year-old recalled that following the New York Marathon, he celebrated with his brothers and, without having eaten, consumed a significant amount of beer before a live segment from a remote studio in Times Square.

“Suddenly I was live and being asked questions by Lorraine,” Dr Hilary explained. “All I remember was giggling, laughing, and talking nonsense because I was a bit drunk. Afterwards I thought, ‘They’re going to sack me, I’ve made a big faux pas.’”
However, the presenter and production team reassured him that he had sounded “happy” and “energetic,” allowing him to continue his regular appearances on the show. “I phoned them and said, ‘I’m really sorry,’ and they said, ‘Why? You sounded brilliant, just happy and euphoric. It was really energetic and lovely.’ So, I got away with it,” he added.

Looking ahead, ITV has announced major schedule changes for 2026. Lorraine and Loose Women will be shortened from an hour to 30 minutes and will air on a seasonal basis. Dr Hilary indicated that he expects to continue contributing via guest appearances, maintaining a medical presence on the programme.

Lorraine Kelly, who has fronted the show since 2010, reflected on the changes: “It’s a different world we live in. I’m a realist and I knew there had to be cutbacks and changes. There are so many more outlets now, and television has to cut its cloth in every single department.” She added optimistically, “This is just another change — who knows what will happen in six months? We just get on with it and see what happens. Nothing ever stays still.”
Despite adjustments to the format, both Lorraine and Dr Hilary remain committed to providing engaging content for viewers, with medical insights continuing to be a key element of the show.
