Country music icon Tim McGraw has endured a series of major surgeries in a remarkably short period, and he openly admits that the ordeal pushed him to the brink of retiring from performing entirely.

During his concert stop in Highland, California, on Saturday, October 25, McGraw took a moment to open up to the audience about his challenging recovery process.

“I’ve undergone four back surgeries and double knee replacements, all just in the past couple of years,” McGraw shared with the crowd, as captured in a video from Fox News.

“Things were getting really tough,” he added.

These procedures compelled McGraw to pause his career for an extended time.

He stepped away from the stage for almost a full year following the double knee surgery, and an earlier back operation also forced him to bow out of a Netflix series where he was slated to star and serve as executive producer.

It’s no surprise that McGraw confessed to feeling “deeply depressed” amid the hardships he was enduring. The struggles were so intense that he seriously contemplated ending his country music career.

McGraw Reveals His Wife, Faith Hill, Has Also Faced Multiple Surgeries

Clearly, McGraw persevered and chose that it wasn’t yet time to hang up his hat. In fact, he’s returned with even greater strength and vigor.

He’s back on tour and has just announced a fresh lineup of shows for December. He’ll be stepping in for Dolly Parton’s delayed Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

McGraw also mentioned that he wasn’t the only one in his family recovering from significant operations. His wife, Faith Hill, has undergone several of her own in recent years.

Hill typically maintains privacy about her personal matters, but McGraw explained he was sharing their stories because both of their surgeons were present in the audience that evening, and he wanted to express profound gratitude for their exceptional care.

“The doctor who performed my double knee replacement is here tonight,” McGraw said, inviting him to stand for applause. “Dr. Chen, where are you? There he is!”

“My wife has been through quite a few surgeries as well. She’s had five neck surgeries and a couple of hand surgeries. Her hand surgeon, Dr. Rose, is here tonight,” he went on, calling for another round of cheers.

But McGraw wasn’t opening up solely because the doctors were there. He elaborated that after navigating through it all, he channeled his raw emotions and suffering into his music.

“This spring, before my final back surgery, things were hitting rock bottom, so I was genuinely considering and planning how to step away,” he admitted.

“I didn’t want to, but I didn’t think it would improve. But it has gotten better. So, during that time, I came up with this idea for a song that tackles facing age and everything that comes with it.”

The song McGraw performed for the audience was “King Rodeo.”

The track initially signaled his return when he debuted it at the first-ever Music City Rodeo in May. He later released it officially in August, complete with its music video.
