Fans of the popular quiz show were not happy after an answer was edited for time, arguing on Reddit that the response that made it to the air would not have counted

Jeopardy! fans were divided after spotting an editing blunder during one answer that some argue should not have been accepted.

During a recent episode of the popular trivia quiz show, the answer to one question left fans up in arms, slamming producers for not calling it an incorrect response. The correct response to the question at hand was ‘What is Les Misérables?’, referring to the novel by Victor Hugo that was adapted into a long-running Broadway musical and later into a film of the same name.

The contestant’s answer left fans “surprised,” with one viewer saying that they were “waiting for Ken to say, ‘Can you be more specific?’”

The contestant buzzed in with the answer ‘What is Les Miz?’

Les Miz is widely known to be a shorthand for the Broadway musical, though some Jeopardy! viewers were not happy that the answer was counted as correct during gameplay. In a Reddit post titled, “Victor Hugo would be very, very surprised to learn that he’d written a book called ‘Les Miz,’” one fan said they would have “waited a beat for him to say the actual title” if they were host Ken Jennings.

The fan explained the blunder, writing, “Les Miz is not the title. The musical has had the nickname ‘Les Miz’ for decades, of course, but the book the musical is based on has never had that nickname. You wouldn’t say that Les Miz is based on the novel of the same name; you’d say Les Miz is based on the novel ‘Les Misérables.’”

One user replied to the post, clarifying that the contestant did, in fact, say the full title during taping, but it was “edited out for time.” The Redditor continued, “After hearing that, my issue is with the editors, who should’ve removed the ‘Les Miz.’ answer rather than the correct answer if they needed to shorten things. As it is they left an incorrect impression with people that ‘Les Miz.’ was ok.”

A different fan called the edit a “bonehead decision,” suggesting that it was made by “someone new to the show who doesn’t know how the Jeopardy fandom works.”

Other Jeopardy! fans argued that the switch-up wasn’t that serious, with one writing, “Oh, lord, this is top-tier pedantic.” Another noted, “It’s an extremely common shorthand that couldn’t reasonably be mistaken for another work. I don’t know why it wouldn’t be allowed as an answer.”
