Many Jeopardy viewers took notice of Jonathan Hugendubler’s buzzer technique
Jeopardy! fans were left distracted by one contestant’s on-air buzzer habit as they encouraged the gameshow contestant to “calm down.”
During the Sept. 9 episode of Jeopardy, contestants Ian Morrison, an airline ramp agent originally from Aurora, Colorado, Stacy Shelly, an attorney from Rockford, Illinois, and Jonathan Hugendubler, an adjunct professor and trivia host from Baltimore, took the stage to test out their trivia knowledge.
This week marked Jeopardy’s highly-anticipated season 42 return after the gameshow took a six-week-long summer hiatus. Whether it was fueled by coffee or on-air jitters, many Jeopardy! fans were quick to call out contestant Jonathan during the episode for his unique buzzer technique throughout the episode.
As Jonathan enthusiastically buzzed in with his answers throughout the game, many viewers at home took notice of his forceful hand. On X, formerly Twitter, one viewer wrote, “Jonathan is tearing up that buzzer.”
The gameshow round marked the second episode of the 42nd season of Jeopardy
Another person posted, “Stop killing the buzzer, Jonathan!” Another joked, “Jonathan is about to break his thumb.”
While a third added, “Jonathan is killing that buzzer or at least making a good play for it.” And someone else remarked, “Jonathan is making me anxious.”
While another person suggested, “Jonathan ought to calm down.”
Over on Reddit, someone else wrote, “Really exciting game. Stacy and Ian hit great strides in DJ, it was refreshing to see their calm approach in contrast to Jonathan’s very erratic buzzer technique. I wonder if he focused less on mashing that buzzer he would’ve fared better. I’m super happy for Ian, he seems like a nice guy!”

Despite the criticism towards his buzzing technique, many sang the highest praises for Jonathan and his impressive game. One fan wrote on Reddit, “Loved Jonathan’s little strat of getting DD2 in that one category and then not finishing that category but going to a different one. Shame it didn’t pay off but Stacy and Ian were also awesome today :D”
And another fan supportively added, “Damn that was an epic game! Ian crushed that DJ round and I would have never guessed that FJ question! Sad to see Jonathan go as he’s a great player but I’m excited to see how Ian fares this week.”
By the end of the round, Jonathan landed himself in second place behind Ian with a grand total score of $18,400 including 19 right and 4 wrong answers.
