The 33-year-old veteran and his partner Riku Miura had just delivered a flawless free skate to music from Gladiator, posting a world-record score of 158.13 to leap from 5th after a disastrous short program lift error to Japan’s first-ever pairs Olympic gold (total 231.24). As the scores flashed and “Kimigayo” played, Kihara’s face contorted in overwhelming joy – he cried uncontrollably on the ice, then again in the Kiss & Cry area, screaming and letting it all out after 48 hours of despair.
