BBC confirms premiere date for Ludwig season 2 – and it’s soon
David Mitchell is reprising his role as John Taylor.
Ludwig will return to the BBC later this month, it has been confirmed.
The detective dramedy series, which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August, with all six episodes to be released on iPlayer on the same date.
Fans will no doubt be delighted that they’ll have the chance to binge the new episodes, which will see Mitchell resume his role as John “Ludwig” Taylor, a reclusive puzzle maker who publishes puzzle books under the pen name Ludwig.
He also plays the character James Taylor, who is John’s identical twin brother and a successful detective chief inspector in the Cambridge police force.
Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases. Ludwig became the BBC’s biggest comedy launch in six years when it debuted in September 2024.

The synopsis for the second season reads: “Now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.
“Of course, John won’t stop, and neither will Lucy, John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James – a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.”
Martin will resume her role as Lucy Betts-Taylor, and Dipo Ola will return as DI Russell Carter. Season two will also see some new faces join the cast as Line of Duty actor Mark Bonnar will portray newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, and Fleabag star Sian Clifford will play local MP Joanne Kemper.
Speaking about the show’s return, Mitchell said: “I am delighted that Ludwig will be returning to solve more of Mark Brotherhood’s brilliant mysteries. I can’t wait to get started and have renewed the subscription on my denouement-learning app.”
Ludwig season two will air on BBC One at 9pm on Thursday 20 August, and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from the same date.
