The blaze was sparked the night of Dec. 28 along Blacksnake Road in Gaston County.

Lucia-Riverbend firefighters said several fire departments from across Gaston and Lincoln counties were called to the home.

Pictures shared by the Lucia-Riverbend Fire Department showed the main part of the house engulfed in tall flames, with much of the home gone by the time the fire was out.

“We are thankful for the multiple agency response and ask that the public be in prayer for the affected family and our first responders in fire, GEMs and police,” the department wrote on Facebook.

Tax records connected the property to a company owned by NASCAR star Denny Hamlin, as well as his father, Dennis Hamlin.

Gaston County officials confirmed midday Monday that one person died from injuries sustained in the fire, while the other was still in critical condition.

Hamlin — who is often active on social media — had not addressed the fire online as of early Monday morning.

Fire officials had not publicly said what caused the blaze as of this writing. Some pictures of the fire are below.

The 45-year-old Hamlin won his 60th Cup Series race in 2025, and came within just a few miles of winning his first championship in November before late-race drama resulted in Kyle Larson taking the title in the season finale.

Sunday’s fire came just 10 days after a plane crash at Statesville Regional Airport claimed the lives of former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and six other people.
