The lead singer of Aerosmith, 77, honored the lateĀ Ozzy OsbourneĀ at theĀ 2025 MTV VMAsĀ on Sunday, Sept. 7 with aĀ performance of “Mama, Iām Coming Home”Ā accompanied by his bandmateĀ Joe Perry,Ā YungbludĀ and guitaristĀ Nuno Bettencourt.
The song was a single from Osbourne’s 1991 albumĀ No More Tears.
The tribute performance comes after AerosmithĀ announced its retirement from touringĀ in August 2024 following Tyler’sĀ onstage larynx fracture.
Last month, Perry said the rocker isĀ not interested in touring again.Ā “I would bet that thereās an Aerosmith show left. Thereās been talk about doing a documentary, that might be part of it,” he said in an interview with Boston radio station WBUR.
“Iāve been spending a lot of time with Steven and he just doesnāt want to tour and he canāt tour. Itās tough,” the guitarist continued.
About six months after Aerosmith announced their retirement, TylerĀ took to the stageĀ at his Jam for Janie Grammy Awards Viewing Party in Los Angeles. There, he performed a cover of Extreme’s “More Than Words,ā “Toys in the Attic” and “Dream On,ā among others.
Two weeks later, former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum said the performance “was a really big moment for him because he hurt himself bad.” However, he added that Tyler remains uninterested in touring. “Now, is he gonna tour again? No, heās not. Because, and I explained this to people, Steven cannot put himself under the rigors of doing a full worldwide tour because thereās a lot of pressure.”
Aerosmith shared an emotionalĀ statementĀ upon Osbourne’s death, writing, “Weāre heartbroken to hear about the passing of our brother in rock, Ozzy Osbourne. A voice that changed music forever.”
“From Black Sabbath to his solo work, Ozzy redefined what it meant to be heavy. He did it all with heart, grit, and that wild spirit only he could bring,” continued the statement. “Our love goes out to Sharon, his family, his band, and the millions around the world who felt his fire.”
The 2025 MTV VMAs air live from New York’s UBS Arena on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and MTV. The ceremony will also stream on Paramount+.
